Cats Behavior: What Is The Norm?
Cats behavior is so different for each cat, ranging from being your best bud to the haughty queen, that it just adds to the reasons that cat lovers enjoy their companions, besides the more obious physical differences.
People often call us the crazy cat people as we had up to thirteen different indoor cats living with us at one time. One of our first cats was a beautiful, tri-colored cat called Pansy. She was shy and was considered to be a "bookworm", as she loved to sit on top of the encyclopedias. Even then she made life interesting as she usually singled out the Encyclopedia Britannica as her perch.
Eric, a short-haired marmalade, made up for his occasional lapses in litter box training by being the cat that was always there with you if you were sick or upset. Tinker, the smartest, was able to open a step-on garbage can effortlessly and, whenever he found my guitar lying around, would lay there happily plinking out tunes by the hour.
It is important for you to know what is normal about your cats behavior. If they go running crazily around the house every night at the same exact time, then that is probably one of their oddities. However, if your cat is normal restful and follows this same pattern then there may be something to be concerned about, anything from being sick to being resentful of a visit from your Aunt Tillie.
A cat is dependant on stability, which means a change in their daily routine can disrupt a cat and cause unexplained cat behavior. For example, a cat could decide that they no longer like the litter they are using by refusing to use their litter box. It is in your cat's best interest to determine what will help make the situation stable again, which in this case, would be to find another type of litter that the cat likes.
So, in general, realize that cats behavior is as varied as human behavior. The more you know about what's baseline "normal" for your cat the easier it will be for you to pick up on behavioral variations that are trying to tell you something.
About the Author: Cat lovers are as varied as the many different types of cats. Size and color alone don't necessarily determine one's choice of cat. Each one is unique and learning your cats behavior will reduce many concerns. Sometimes it may take some time to truly learn the idiosyncrasies of each one. Their personalities range from aloofness to affectionate, unconcerned to clingy, and everything in between. Security is of paramount importance, however, since cats are habitual and generally set in their routines. Cats and humans, therefore, bear a great deal of similarities.
