An Off-Grid Solar System Helps Build a Lake Front Cabin in KY
Photovoltaic (PV) Systems have not taken off in Kentucky as well as other states like Ohio and California where incentives have helped lower the cost for the customer. Due to the high cost and long payback, it is not always feasible to install PV systems in the state of KY. However, one customer of SunWind Power Systems found out quickly that a PV system would be more cost effective than running a power line out to the remote spot where his lake-front cabin would be built.
The property is located 1 mile back from the main road near Nolin Lake, which meant an easement would have to be maintained. In addition, the number of trees on the property would make maintenance difficult and power unreliable during storms and windy days. Service would likely be slow as well. Taken together, solar electric became a cost-effective alternative.
Because the customer approached SunWind Power Systems prior to construction of the cabin, we were able to consult and work with the architect to build a high energy efficient building. Highly energy efficient appliances were planned to be used in the cabin as well, further decreasing energy demand as well as cost of a solar system. The garage was erected first, and the solar system was installed before the construction of the cabin. Twenty panels were installed on the roof for the 3.5 kW systems, and a generator is used for back-up power.
Advanced planning and installation of the solar system prior to construction of the cabin, has its benefits. The PV system is currently supplying the power required to build the cabin, and once the cabin is built, will provide reliable and clean power for the summer retreat.
