The Importance of Dating Humor

Social Benefits of Laughter: Laughter connects us with others. Also, laughter is contagious, so if you bring more laughter into your life, you can most likely help others around you to laugh more, and realize these benefits as well. By elevating the mood of those around you, you can reduce their stress levels and, perhaps, improve the quality of social interaction you experience with them, reducing your stress level even more!”

After thirty years of dating, I’ve been out with a lot of people. Bad dates never have humor and are filled with a lot of silence. There’s rarely a smile, let alone a smirk. Don’t even ask if there were any laughs or even giggles, because there weren’t any. Now, dating humor doesn’t always tickle everyone’s funny bone, but it can also change a terrible date into a very memorable one.
I’ve got to be honest, if we’re truly going to get down to the bottom of dating humor. Picture this: You’ve spent the night with someone very special, and you’re snuggled in bed still sound asleep. Something is amiss, however, as you notice a truly rancid smell – coming from the person’s mouth. The dreaded morning breath has woken you up and has really put you off. However, he or she knows the potency of the nasty halitosis and quips at his own expense because of his poisonous breath. That reminds you that this person was the same adorable, hilarious guy or girl you had a wonderful night with – just with a bit of bad breath.
Now, let’s look at the same situation with a little different lens. Instead of making a joke about his breath that peels the paint off the walls, he or she sits there, breathing their own personal swamp gas on you. Are you going to stay there and take it, or are you going to make a run for the door? I’d bet you’d be out running.
Dating humor is an important way to keep a relationship going and to create stronger bonds. It takes bad situations and can make them better, even enjoyable.
I still get a chuckle out of an old boyfriend of mine when I remember that first date of ours. He had me laughing a lot because of his dating humor, which is what I loved the most about him. Everyone has flaws, but his funny nature and his sense of humor, helped me see past those flaws to see the great guy that he is. Now, I certainly don't believe that everyone should try to be a stand-up comedian, since that’s also a great way to fall flat on your face in a date. Instead, never take things too seriously. Try to find the humor in everything – good or bad – in life and in dating. Not only will you find you have more fun on your date, but you’ll also reap the benefits of laughter in your life.
Best regards!
