The Baby Gaggia espresso machine for your home

The Italians must know a thing or two about life, because while the rest of us make do with Starbucks and similar coffee shops, Italy is full of bustling cafes serving those short shocks of caffeine known as espresso. In fact where the English drink tea, Italians drink coffee.

While Starbucks is better than nothing, the coffee lacks something in those Styrofoam cups and the atmosphere is certainly un-Italian. So if you can’t go to Starbuck’s for a good cup of coffee, where do you go?

The answer is simple – stay at home.

One of the most renowned brands of espresso maker is Gaggia, the company founded by the man who invented the espresso machine. Decended from their professional range, the home espresso makers are equally well made.

The number one priority in an espresso maker is to have strictly controlled pressure to force the water through the coffee grounds. For this the best home espresso makers utilise a pump system, ensuring uniform pressure.

One of the top selling models for many years has been the Baby Gaggia, compact enough to fit in almost any home and simple to use. Manufactured since 1977, all the functions of the Baby Gaggia are operated by just three buttons.

The Baby Gaggia has recently been updated, with rounded rather than square buttons and the ability to take pods as well as ground coffee. Espresso pods have the big advantage of being mess free but are more expensive and restrict the type of coffee you can try. So is the new, updated Baby Gaggia the perfect espresso maker?

The answer is almost – you’ll need to perform some maintenance from time to time and clean it a lot, but that is the same with any espresso maker. The biggest drawback is the plastic finish and although there was nothing wrong with the previous model the new Baby Gaggia does still look good in the home. Just make sure you use good coffee – Illy or similar are the best – and your coffee will be perfect.
