When I first started my online business I purchased several
internet online courses from the so called gurus and
attempted three or four ideas at the same time. I wanted to
spread my risk with three or four good ideas so that at
least one would work out. I experienced information
overload and could not get any of my ideas to work. Usually
only experienced internet marketers can cope with working
on two or more ideas at the same time. You can compare a
person new to internet marketing to that of a baby where
they first need to learn how to crawl before they can walk.
For this reason they need to focus on one idea for at least
6 months where they can learn the fundamentals which never
change. The skills that you learn for example how to
register a domain and setup your website, keyword research,
write good preselling content, write high converting sales
pages and how to capture leads and market to them forms
part of the core internet marketing skills. You need to
learn how to master these basic skills before you can move
on to another idea.
I would recommend a person new to internet marketing to get
started with affiliate marketing. You do not need to create
or stock a product, you do not need to deal with
complicated payment processors, you do not need to spend
extra time on support or processing refunds and you still
get to learn the fundamentals of internet marketing.
You get two kinds of affiliate marketing Pay-Per-Lead
offers and Pay-Per-Sale Affiliate. When someone takes a
specific action you earn a commission for Pay-Per-Lead
marketing. You earn commission for sending someone to
signup for a trial offer e.g. tea sample or they could
request free information like a quote for car insurance
from a freebies website. The lead gets free information or
a sample of a product and you get paid for generating the
lead. Pay-Per-Sale affiliate marketing where you presell
before your visitor goes to a sales page takes more work
than getting a lead to take a specific action.
Pay-Per-Sale affiliate marketing happens when a visitor
that you refer purchases a product and you receive
commission for that sale. You need to focus on a niche.
For example if you promote weight loss products only offer
affiliate programs related to that. Also choose a well
established merchant that will not go out of business and
choose high quality products that you would use sold at a
competitive price. You also need to ensure that in your
sales funnel you send your visitors to your own lead
generating pages before you refer your visitor to the
merchant. This allows you to presell your prospect and sell
to them over and over again with different products.
If you enjoy writing then start a blog. Signup with a free
service like Blogger that takes care of all the technology
side of things like updating pages, ftp, html, sitemaps
etc... Write quality original content. However, I recommend
registering your own domain and signup for your own web
hosting to publish your blog to. If you decide to choose
the free Blogger hosted blog and you migrate to your own
domain once you become well established this will cause you
to lose your search engine rankings and force you to start
from scratch again. Choose a niche topic like product
reviews of digital cameras, add some good quality affiliate
programs and contextual advertising like Google Adsense to
monetize your blog.
Choose only one idea and focus on this for at least six
months and set the foundations of a stable business.
Consistency will allow you to build up your name and as
your competitors come and go people will trust you even
more. This takes focus and patience.
