Australia Facts

Australia is located in Oceania. It is the world’s smallest continent resting between the South Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean. Australia is the sixth largest country in the world. Its population is most dense along the eastern and southeaster coasts.

Geography
The climate of Australia ranges from arid to semi arid; being temperate in east and south and tropical in north. The Australian terrain consists of low plateau with deserts. The plains are fertile in southeast. Canberra is the capital of Australia, and Sydney its largest city. The population of Australia as per the July 2004 record is 19,913,144 and the total land area 7,686,850 square kms. The lowest elevation is lake Eyre, about fifteen meters below sea level and the highest elevation is Mount Losciuszko, about 2,229 meters above sea level. The Sydney Opera House is famous world over and identifies Australia. The life expectancy rate of Australian males is 77.4 years and of Australian females 83.27 years.

Lake Eyre witnesses the lowest annual rainfall in South Australia; the annual mean precipitation being 100mm only while Tully in Queensland sees the highest rainfall, the annual mean precipitation being 4400mm. Canberra is the foggiest capital city of Australia with a yearly average of 47 fog days. Canberra is also the place where the lowest overnight ground temperatures were recorded at -15.1degrees. Stanthorpe in Queens land also showed -11.0 degrees at one time. The largest Island of Australian water besides Tasmania is Melville Island near Darwin. It scales 5698km of land. Lake Torrens, Lake Eyre and Lake Gairdner are the largest lakes of Australia. Lake St Clair is the deepest lake. The longest river is the Murray River at 2520 km.
Economy

Australia is the world’s largest exporter of sheep, lead, coal, diamond, wool, mineral sands, alumina, and refined zinc ores. Australia also exports nickel, iron ore, veal, sugar, cereals, mutton, beef and lamb. Australia mainly imports crude oil and petroleum products, computers and office machines, machinery and transportation equipment and telecommunication equipments and its parts. Her main trading partners USA, Japan, and EC member states.
