Mayor Calls for Wi-Fi London
Mayor Boris Johnson has told a local London radio station that he aims to make London a “Wi-Fi” city.
Speaking to the radio station, Johnson explained that he believed every Londoner should have access to the web and he wanted to help provide this. His comment comes after Prime Minister Gordon Brown spoke of his plans to provide lower-income families with computers and cheap broadband. Mayor Johnson dismissed these claims as being desperate.
He went on to say that he believes there is a need to make technology, especially the internet, more obtainable to those with lower-incomes and that he thought one of the best things that could be done would be to make the whole of London a Wi-Fi friendly city where people could log on to the web wherever the where.
Boris Johnson also said that he believed improvements should be made to the city’s infrastructure to enable broadband Wi-Fi access to be available across all of London. He suggested that the work should begin in Stratford, where the 2012 Olympics will be held, the only information that he didn’t give away was whether or not this service would be free.
This report comes at a time when people are becoming more and more aware of their own internet at home. Many people are now doing tests that you can find on the internet which tell them at what speed their internet is currently working. If this speed test shows that it is significantly slower than what they are being led to believe then they can ring their provider with the information in order to try and get better broadband deals. The problem is that most of the providers use the phrase “up to” which means that they can often get out of the fact that your internet is running at a speed less than half of the maximum speed quoted.
