Do you have a yeast infection?

Yeast infection or thrush or in medical terminology Candidiasis, is a fungal infection of any of the Candida species, the most common of them being which Candida albicans.

Because almost all people are hosts to a variety of Candida, our bodies have developed ways to prevent infection on its own.The mucous membranes are usually an effective barrier to infection, and immune cells search out and destroy yeast cells that appear in the wrong places. If we get yeast infection, it may also indicate that one or more of our natural defense systems has failed, or the chemical balance of our bodies has changed.

Hence When choosing a treatment option, we should look for a form of treatment that will strengthen our natural defense system and improve our overall health. A mild infection may go away on its own as your immune system, bacterial population, or hormone balance comes back into balance.

However we would like to resort to medication to reduce yeast infection and get rid of the symptoms. A quick fix approach to killing the yeast is usually not recommended. We must go in for systemic antifungal medications that can be taken either orally or by IV injection, as prescribed by our doctor. Sometimes doctors also prescribe a topical cream or ointment that affects only the specific area where the infection occurs.

Why do some people get yeast infections while others don’t?

Since yeast is as old as human life on earth, our bodies have developed natural defense systems to prevent infectious outbreaks. When those defenses break down or our chemical balance is disturbed, the harmless yeast that lives in and on our bodies can change to its infectious phase and cause us all sorts of misery. In a way, a yeast infection is always a symptom that something else has gone wrong.

The three most important factors that determine if you will get a yeast infection are:

1. The loss of balance between yeast and "good" bacteria in your body which may have many causes like consuming a diet that is high in sugar and white flour or the reaction of some antibiotics.

2. A weak immune system which may be caused by illness or eating lifestyle deficient in nutrition. Other reasons may be suppression of immune system by medical treatments.

3. Hormone imbalance caused by medication such as birth control pills, and certain illnesses, such as diabetes and thyroid dysfunction.

Since none of us have total control over our health, there is no way to guarantee that we will never have yeast infection. However by undergoing regular medical check, understanding the symptoms and taking necessary precautions we can at least alleviate the conditions if we are affected.
