The hearth of the fireplace can actually be considered the heart of the fireplace and it is really just a recess in the wall where the fire is built. These are not always used whenever there is a fire burning on a regular basis but at times, they are left in the fire box even when the fire is being burnt. You may also be able to enhance the looks of the hearth by adding such things as a fireplace screen or perhaps glass doors. Not only will these help to protect the rest of the room but they will enhance the looks of the fireplace, overall.
