Classic Wall Decor

Times of knights in shining armor fighting dragons in order to save a damsel in distress on down to tournaments and battles fought an won with swords and crossbows. There are also many renaissance tapestries that include stories of the Bible or are taken from the legends and mythology of the lands.

The renaissance was a time when tapestry artwork helped to serve as a way to express the frustration of these artists who were denied the right to interpret their own depiction of a story, instead they would have to copy what a painter had already created. Many weavers were frustrated that their work was only seen as an imitation of a painting so this lead to a decline in the tapestry industry during the 17th century.

Some tapestry creators were able to find a way to show themselves creatively without diverging from the original painters piece. By making small changes in the way they positioned secondary characters or by hiding messages or symbols in a border of the wall décor they took back some of their individualization.

These interpretations may be seen in wall tapestries like:

‘Killing of the Wild Boar’- In the surroundings a squirrel is eating an acorn, while a crow and woodpecker are plainly sitting on the tree, all of them oblivious to the carnage happening below.
‘Miraculous Draft of Jesus’ – Here the weaving artist placed pagan gods within the boarder surrounding Jesus, pushing the issue of creating false gods.

Renaissance Tapestries are great pieces to invest in because they were made during a time in history when the arts were being repressed so the artist had to work in hidden personal expression.
