Creating Your CV and Covering Letter For Graduate Jobs
The Graduate Jobs market is one of the most competitive markets throughout all of the jobs sectors in the UK. With this in mind, to be a successful applicant, there is no doubt that you need to make yourself stand out from the competition and make it clear that you are the right man or woman for the job! Despite what some people may think and even tell you, landing that dream job of yours isn't actually that difficult - if you approach it in the correct way. There are certain steps you can take during your application process to give you the best chance possible of getting the job. The first habit that you really need to get out of, and quickly is to to stop rushing to send your CV off to every employer advertising a position you are interested in. Many of us have done this in the past and I'm sure many will do so in the future. The problem with simply sending a pre-made CV is that the CV will ultimately look like it has just been sent. By this I mean employers will take a look at your CV and quickly come to the conclusion that it has been sat on your PC for a while and sent with little to no attention paid to it before doing so. So the first thing that you really need to focus on is to tailor your CV specifically for each employer or job itself. Many people do not do this to save time if they are applying for a few vacancies and their chances of landing graduate jobs suffer because of it. To go alongside your CV you will need a covering letter. Like your CV, your covering letter does need to be unique enough for each position that you apply for. Your covering letter could almost be considered to be your sales pitch letter, which has to tell your potential new employers why they should hire you and not the other people have applied. If it does not do this, then your application could be glanced over and you could be in line for a rejection letter. So take the time to either go through your covering letter, or write a new one each time, picking out what the job advert is looking for in a candidate. If you do that, you should see that the amount of positive responses you receive will improve dramatically.
