Choose Fans for Lighting and Other Purposes

Lighting is extremely important for human activities, and according to technological development, innovations and progress in this particular domain have been registered too. The evolution has been so dramatic that it did not affect only the materials or the energy sources for our illumination, but it also concerns the variety of artificial sources of light. Thus, we no longer stick to candles or oil lamps because we have no other choice. On the contrary, according to our needs and to the places we want to illuminate, we may use lamps, chandeliers, fixtures, close to the ceiling lights, spot lights or pendant lights, exterior pendants and exterior sconces, security lights and landscape lights, just to mention a few.

However, among these types of items, fans still represent one of our top choices, given the fact that they can be used, at their turn, for specific purposes – such as exhausting the air from high humidity rooms, ventilating the air within closed or open spaces, heating and, finally, lighting up our rooms – and because they come in different shapes and sizes. All these means we have the possibility to choose from a large range of alternatives.

Say we do want to buy a fan. In order to be as efficient as possible with respect to our choice, we have some things we have to consider if we want to make the best of our new device. First of all, we have to make sure we made a good choice. And, indeed, ceiling fans do not only have a positive impact on our home decor, but they also useful in the summer and in the winter, enhancing cooling and respectively warming the air within our homes during these months. It is said that using a fan can considerably reduces energy consumption and, subsequently, energy bills with about 10% and 40%.

But it is efficiency that we are in search of, above all. In order to be efficient, first we may want to go for a fan the size of which matches the size or the room in which we want to set it. Large rooms around 225 square feet would go better with devices that are about 50"-54". Ceiling fans between 36" and 42" are suitable for medium sized rooms up to 144 square feet need. And, finally, the smaller the room, the smaller should the fan be: in a room up to 75 square feet – such as a bathroom – a 29"-36" fan is perfect.

Since, besides ventilation, lighting is the main concern when it comes to fans, your fan must be hung in the center of a room, which is a perfect spot to provide light for the entire room. If you have in mind a certain effect, up-lighting is perfect for a diffuse light, and down-lighting is more common, more traditional. The texture and the color of the glass out of which the globes are made, as well as the globes shape, all these influence the way your room will be illuminated.
