Caring for Valuable Collectibles

There are many ways to appreciate and care for your valuable collectibles. Many people spend several years of their life growing their collection. Depending upon what it is that you choose to collect, there may be a real opportunity for value along the way. Of course, that is only if the collection is well maintained and effectively cared for with a knowledgeable hand. Not all collections are intended to be valuable pieces or heirlooms but if that is your intent, it’s never too soon to get started with proper care.

Collectibles that are set out on display should be dusted on a regular basis. By lightly dusting collectibles every week you eliminate any build up of dirt and grime. This not only keeps it clean but looking nice as well. If your collection is a material that can be immersed in water, wash it with gentle soap once a month or so in order to retain clarity and cleanliness. The accumulation of dirt can age pieces much faster than if they are cleaned weekly or monthly.

The storage of most collectibles should always be kept somewhere around room temperature. Extreme temperatures of either hot or cold are known to damage materials. Do not display collections near stoves, air conditioners or anywhere that they may become wet or damp. Bacteria can breed incredibly fast, especially when water or moisture is present.

Perhaps your collection consists of books. Books make a great collectible but they can be a real challenge to properly care for as the years pass. Paper is very prone to yellowing and becoming fragile. Consider using book covers to keep the air away from the book jacket which will help protect the colours and the print. Incredibly valued books should be stored in an air tight location.

There are many great products that can be used for cleaning and making repairs to collectibles. If you are new to any of these products then it’s recommended to do a test sample first. Rub a tiny bit of the product on an area of the collectible that will be hidden from view if it should discolour the item. If the collectible is especially fragile or easily ruined, it may be preferable to see a professional for assistance. They can direct you to products and methods of maintenance that may otherwise go overlooked.

Items such as collectible coins, stamps or family heirloom jewellery should be stored in proper containers or behind plastic casing. Photo albums and scrapbooks are perfect for keeping stamps and coins safe and organized. It makes it easy to flip through for showing to others or displaying certain pages while keeping them safe from harm. Enclosed glass cases or china cabinets are perfect for those items best kept out of reach. Valuables should be encased rather than left out in the open.

Caring for valuables requires patience and dedication. What many may find to be boring in actuality may be incredibly rewarding. The best part is passing them on to the next in line for their enjoyment and pleasure.
