Potty Training Regression:All Is Not Lost!
Your toddler has been progressing steadily through her potty training and you’re beginning to think this isn’t so hard after all, when all of a sudden she’s having more and more accidents.
It’s hard not to be frustrated when, not only is she not making progress, it seems like she’s actually lost what ground she gained. Understanding potty training regression is the first step to correcting it.
External Factors
When your child appears to be regressing, look around for a change in her environment.
Did she recently stop, start or change daycare? Has her home routine changed? Has someone come into or left her world? Even small changes can trigger a period of regression. Big changes, like a new sibling, can set her back almost to square one.
The next external factor to consider is a medical issue. If the regression lasts more than a couple of days and you can’t identify a change that may have triggered it, it’s time to have a pediatrician take a look.
An undiagnosed urinary tract infection or constipation may be at the root of the problem. Remember, she may not have the words to tell you something doesn’t feel right in her body.
Be Patient
Regression is a normal stage in potty training. There may be times when your child regresses for a while and you never know the reason. She may be feeling anxious about being a big kid and decide she wants to be a baby for a while longer.
Regardless of the reason behind the regression, becoming frustrated and punishing her will only aggravate the situation. Keep to the routine you’ve established, continue to encourage her and reward her when she’s successful. This too shall pass and she’ll get back on track soon.
