Potty Training Techniques: Do They Really Help?
Potty training usually starts about the time a child hits the “terrible two's” which is a challenge in itself. Potty training a child who has just the discovered the power of “no” requires a lot of patience and resilience. Here are a few things that may help.
Make it Her Decision
If you believe your child is developmentally ready to begin potty training, and you've educated yourself on the process, then the decision to begin potty training has already been made. However, approaching a two year old and simply telling her she is going to start using the potty will probably result in a resounding “no” and enough resistance to make a Missouri mule jealous. Try simply talking about the difference between big kids and babies, point out how much more fun big kids can have and ask her if she'd like to learn to be a big kid. At two, this conversation will probably take several attempts.
Once she agrees she wants to be like the big kids, ask her about her diapers. Do big kids wear diapers? Where do big kids go potty?
The point is to move her thinking to the difference between her and big kids that get to do much more fun things. Having older siblings or older kids in her daycare really helps since she can watch and see the differences for herself.
Once she reaches the conclusion that she must stop using diapers and wear underwear to be a big kid, you've hit your first success.
Give Her Ownership
Again, this age is all about making decisions and controlling things around them as much as possible. Since she's going to be a big kid now, she needs big kid underwear. Let her pick out the ones she likes. If you're going to use a potty chair, let her pick out her own special potty.
Let Her Control the Pace
She's making a big step in her life and she knows it. There will most likely be times when she wants to slip back to being a baby again. When this happens, don't make an issue of it. She may even want to wear a diaper. Let her know she can wear a diaper if she chooses that day, but she won't be able to do fun big kid things because big kids use the potty and wear underwear. She'll soon choose to resume her potty training.
Potty training techniques can come in very handy when faced with a child who wants to practice making her own choices.
