The efficient and high performance of Sony LTO tape storage media
The Sony Company has developed and introduced the new, advanced and high performance Sony Ultrium LTO4 backup storage tape cartridge. The Sony LTO-4 backup tape has compressed capacity of 1.6TB with native capacity of 800GB. The data transfer speed is 240MB/sec. This new LTO-4 tape contains new technologies like surface smoothing and coating technology. The backup time has also been reduced and the maximum compressed data transfer speed is 240MB/sec. the Sony LTO-4’s reel accuracy has also been improved and the thin tape has long length.
The Sony tape performs stable operation due to the optimized hub roundness. The Sony LTO4 backup tape cartridge has non-contact 8KB IC memory, whose capacity is double as of the previous generations LTO-1, LTO-2 and LTO-3 backup tapes. The head and the tape contact with each other harshly while the data is being read. Therefore, this harsh contact of head and tape causes wear. So, as a result static electricity is created. The Sony LTO backup tapes have been designed to overcome the problem of wear and static electricity. Therefore, after many read and writing cycles, the media performance of Sony LTO backup tape cartridges remains stable. The new technology introduced in the Sony LTO backup tapes provides optimum values for the system and provide stable reading and writing continuously
In linear tape open formats, the high sensitivity MR heads are used. Because, the LTO are considered as the high density storage formats. There are many ultra thin layers of the MR Head. The MR Head is extremely delicate.
The working of the MR head is very much disturbed by the static electricity, and the MR head can be destroyed even by a minute static charge electricity. In order to overcome the problem of static electricity, the electricity to the outside is released slowly. Therefore, the static charge cannot build on the tape. The electric resistance of the tape is also lowered down. The electricity can flow from outside if the resistance is lowered too much. So, too much lowered resistance can effect and disturb control of the electric control.
The new and advanced technology of the Sony LTO backup tapes minimizes the wear to the head of the drive. The surface of Sony tape is very smooth, that is why even after prolonged contact the head does not damage the tape.
