European Tapestries

Just about anything and everything can be the subject of these decorative wall hangings we have come to know as tapestries. However, some subjects are more popular in comparison to others. Take for instance, decorative wall hangings with a European theme. This specific type of artwork is one of the most popular kinds around. The popularity of this particular type of decorative work of art can probably be attributed to the fact that these artworks trace their roots back to the European continent. According to historical accounts, the oldest samples of these works of art, estimated to be created in the 2nd or 3rd century BC, were found in the European country of Greece. Apart from this, Europe’s rich and vibrant cultural tradition and heritage provide immense inspiration and a wonderful backdrop to this magnificent type of artwork. France is the famed giant in tapestry perfection.

During the middle ages, European monasteries widely practiced the unique art of wall décor making. Most of these European wall decorations produced in the 13th century featured oriental- and eastern-themed designs, based on the stories and accounts of the Crusaders. During the 16th century, Flanders was established as the production capital of these European wall decors. Over the next few centuries, the craft took a backseat to other art forms, but resurfaced and rose to popularity again in the 19th century through the efforts of William Morris, who made these decorative wall pieces for the Church and for art patrons, as well.

Nowadays, the traditional method of making these works of art is still being practiced in European workshops and at the Gobelins factory in Paris, France.

There is a wide variety of subject matters that are depicted in these European decorative wall hangings. Some examples include European landmarks, famous vacation destinations in Europe, European cityscapes and landscapes, celebrated literary works of European writers and authors, and replicas or reproductions of masterpieces of renowned European artists and masters, among others. Among the most well-known of these wall decorations are the Sampul Tapestry, the oldest in existence, which was found at a 2nd-3rd century mass grave in the Tarim Basin; the Hestia Tapestry from the 6th century; the L'Histoire de L'Apocalypse (Apocalypse Tapestries) series from the 14th century, which can be seen at the Chateau of Angers in france; La Dame à la licorne (“The Lady and the Unicorn”) series from the 15th century; the Acts of the Apostles series, which was designed by Raphael from the 16th century; and the Joseph Jacquard-produced artworks.
