Flights - Ionian Archipelago
Greece is well known amongst tourists for its Mediterranean climate and laid back lifestyle. There are many islands along the country’s coastline, many of which are popular with tourists.
One of the largest island groups is the Ionian archipelago, each island has its’ own unique landscape, sights and appeal with varying types of tourist.
Flights to the islands usually connect at Athens, but there are a number of companies who are able to fly direct from many major airports in Europe.
Paxos is the smallest island in the archipelago, so small in fact that it’s possible to walk from one end to the other in just one day. However, with a range of gorgeous beaches and crystal clear coves that are perfect for diving excursions available to holidaymakers, it’s hard to see why you’d want to.
In contrast, the largest of these islands is Kefalonia – the setting for the novel Captain Corelli’s Mandolin – the release of the movie adaptation of which was followed by an increase in visitors to the island.
Kefalonia is a mountainous island which is known for a number of spectacular views, as well as a large number of caves that are popular with tourists.
Many choose to escape to Greece, utilising a vast range of cheap flights available to them, in order to escape the dreary weather and soak up some sun on the miles of sandy beaches on the islands.
A popular destination for visitors to the Ionian archipelago is the island of Corfu. The island is steeped in history, which can be seen in the wide range of architecture and museums dotted around the island.
Indeed, many of the islands main tourist attractions are based around ancient and military history. Corfu City, the capital of the island, is recognised by UNESCO, and remains one of the major tourist attractions on the island.
The ancient city has a rich mix of ancient Greek and Venetian influences, giving it a uniqueness that draws in thousands of tourists each year.
Flights to Corfu are readily available nowadays, but for those looking to take to the water there are a wide range of boating and diving excursions available off the coast of all the islands in the Ionian archipelago.
