Tapestries by Famous Artists - Sunday Afternoon
Georges-Pierre Seurat, the genius behind Sunday Afternoon, is a French artist often considered the father of the Neo-Impressionist movement. Sunday Afternoon, short for Sunday Afternoon on the Island of la Grande Jatte, depicts urbanites gathered together at a park on La Grade Jatte, which literally translates to “the big platter.” Seurat presented a beautiful portrayal of French city dwellers enjoying a beautiful Sunday afternoon on an island along the River Seine, just lounging, sailing, fishing, strolling around underneath the bright, blue sky.
Seurat was heavily influenced by the Impressionists. He brought their style to a whole new level by experimenting with different techniques and employing color and optical theories onto his paintings. He used precise, tiny strokes made of different hues and placed them near one another so that they seemed to blending together when you view them from a distance. Art critics called this theory Pointillisim, or Divisionism. This subsequently influenced other artists as well. Seurat was particularly fond of La Grande Jatte, and made over 30 works of art chronicling the goings-on in this island. Each of them is just as striking as Sunday Afternoon, which is perhaps his most famous painting about the island. The geometric patterns, precise shapes and measured silhouettes, as well as the massive sizes of his paintings stand in stark contrast against the works of the Impressionist artists.
Art scholars have also tried to study the composition of the painting itself. Some think that the characters simply show middle class city dwellers enjoying a day of leisure. Still others view it as a form of tension between the different social classes. The various characters seem to come from all walks of life and they all converge onto the park, unmindful of everyone else.
Whatever the painting tries to communicate, the sheer beauty of the painting cannot be denied.
