Payback Time
Two of college football's biggest teams, Ohio State and Notre Dame, will be focused on overturning painful defeats from last season, as they clash with Penn State and Michigan State on Saturday.
Last year, the Buckeyes lost to the Nittany Lions - a defeat which eventually cost Ohio State the Big Ten's automatic BCS Bowl slot - while the Irish are still smarting from Michigan State's flag being planted on their field after an epic 44-41 overtime loss in 2005. Charlie Weis and his men looked on that as a black eye for their storied team, and coupled with last week's thumping by Michigan, Notre Dame will come out of the tunnel this week-end with all guns blazing.
Tom Brady and his Patriots are also on a payback mission. Jake Plummer and the Broncos beat Brady in the playoffs last year, a defeat that still rankles New England. The experienced Brady played poorly in that encounter and lost in the postseason for the first time in his decorated career. This time, Brady will have his adoring fans behind him, as New England will look to unsettle Plummer, who may be playing for his starting position.
Golf fans are in for a treat as the biggest golf team competition of them all, the Ryder Cup, gets underway in Ireland. Ian Woosnam will captain the Europeans and his men will face a hungry and focused American team anchored by Tom Lehman. After being humiliated by Europe in the 2004 encounter, Lehman needs his men to gel their individual brilliance together to overcome the home crowds and an experienced European side.
