Creating Your Own Website Logo

When it comes to creating your website, designing a logo might not be at the top of your list and in truth it probably isn’t the most important thing to be thinking about.

But if your site launches without a logo you will certainly notice that it’s missing. Every top company – no matter what line of business they happen to be in – knows the power that a good logo has to promote and brand their business in a positive way.

This applies just as much online as it does anywhere else. Think of the eBay logo for example. It is extremely simple but undoubtedly recognisable all over the world. The four colors which make up the letters are also used throughout that website to help brand the site and pull the whole design together.

So how do you start designing your own logo?

The main point to think about is that the best logos are usually very simple. Color is a big factor – think of the simple red Virgin logo for example, or the four colors used in the Google logo – but the actual design is also paramount to how successful and recognisable a particular logo is.

The bottom line is that you want to be sure your logo will be remembered and recognised if someone sees it somewhere other than on your website. This is why it’s best to keep things simple; it’s easier to recall a simple design from memory than it is to recall a complicated one.

Don’t think in terms of shading or detail. Flat images or those which have clear blocks of colour rather than using complex color palettes will generally work best, as they appeal to the simplistic stance you are trying to take.

Think about what your website is all about and what you are trying to achieve when you design your logo. It can help you to decide whether it should be a soft and subtle design or an angular and sharp one. Whatever you think will work make sure you sketch out a few samples by using a proper computer design program before deciding on the ideal logo for your needs.

Don’t forget that you can test your logos on other people too; get the opinions of as many other people as possible – whether they are family, friends, workmates or anyone else you know – to see whether there are any clear winners. While the final decision is down to you it’s good to see whether anyone has any comments or suggestions about any of your ideas, especially if lots of people start pointing at the same logo or commenting on the colors used.

Remember that in the end you will have to live with the logo you choose for a long time, since most logos have a long shelf life to avoid confusing a company’s visitors and customers. It will also be a strong influence on the rest of your website, so make sure it creates just the right impression from the word go.
