The Proper Fire Alarm Cable

It’s hard to know just how important the right fire safety equipment will be unless you’ve been through a fire and have already experienced it. The fact is that the proper equipment can save lives. Every year hundreds of people die in fires. Both burns and smoke inhalation can be fatal. Even people who survive a fire often have emotional issues to deal with, especially if they experienced facial disfigurement from the fire.

The exact requirements for fire equipment are written into local building and fire codes. These requirements were designed to keep all building occupants safe. The kind of fire alarm system that is necessary should have an alarm system that can be heard by everyone in the building. The various fire alarms need to be placed all around throughout the building in order to protect every remote corner. That way, no matter where a fire would start, it could be caught immediately by an alarm in the area.

Fire alarm systems only work as well as the cables which support them. Special fire alarm cables were designed by experienced fire marshals who were well aware of what a cable must face in a fire situation. It was decided that in order to be advertised as fire cable, it must meet certain requirements. It must be able to withstand heat and fire long enough to sound the alert and get everyone out of the building. During this time, it cannot burn or become disabled. This fire resistant cable is the only way you can know your fire alarm equipment will continue to operate if there’s a fire.

Fire-Resistant Cables for Fire Alarm Systems

One of the most dangerous times during a fire comes when all of the occupants are frantically trying to get out of the burning building. There’s panic, and people get pushed down and stepped on. There are others who may have sustained burns or lung damage from smoke inhalation which makes them move slowly. This frustrates others who are trying to hurry, and total chaos ensues.

What if the lights went out in the middle of the chaos? There’s smoke everywhere, and now complete darkness, because the fire alarm cable that operated the security lights has been damaged. It wasn’t up to code, and now it is forcing people to try and exit the building in the dark. Fire alarm cable is supposed to hold up under certain degrees of heat so that it continues to operate long enough to get people to safety.

Unfortunately, some people cut corners when installing fire alarm systems. They authorize the use of cheaper, inferior cable that isn’t designed to withstand a fire. Without the cable keeping lights, alarms, and sprinkler systems operating, tragedies are going to happen.

Working sprinkler systems play a critical part in containing fires and keeping them from spreading as rapidly. Firefighters count on them doing their job. And ventilation systems that need to operate during a fire are important, too. Both of these things need to be hooked to reliable fire cable in order to ensure they will be working when they’re needed. That’s how we save lives!
