Are You Prepared For An Emergency?

Every household should have an emergency kit able to nourish a family for 72 hours-but few people do!

In an emergency, no matter what that emergency is, the officials first precedence is too assess the emergency and implement a plan to help the general public.

So it is important that individuals learn how to help themselves first.

So what should be included in the disaster kits?  The disaster kits should include water for drinking and washing, non-perishable foods like energy bars, crackers and canned goods.
A manual can opener, flashlight and extra batteries.  First aid kit, extra clothing and footwear, sleeping bags or blankets,  toilet paper and other personnal items.

Disaster kits should also be customized  according to the family needs. Medical supplies and baby needs are examples of critical supplies not to forget.

And it is not good to have all these items scattered throught the home.  They should all be together in a case or duffel bag in the outcome that the family needs to be evacuated.

A disaster kit cannot be simply left on the shelf just waiting for an emergency to happen.  It must be replenished with fresh food, water and medication on a continual basis.

Two things that can easily be overlooked is pets and cash.  Make sure you have enough pet food and first aid supplies to last 72 hours.  If hydro goes out then so does ATM`s and online transactions. Small bills and change would come in handy.

If there is no running water, than you will need atleast one case of water per person per day.

With the loss of power come side affects you may not think of.  There will be no gasoline available.  (Without power, there is no way to pump the gas.)  You might be far from home.  Your car's heater might be your only source of heat. The money in your pocket will have to last until power is returned.  Some supplies may be available, but buying some items like a manual can opener will be out of the question.  Cash cards will be useless if power or phone lines are lost.  Many stores will have a hard time opening since items don't have prices on them anymore, thanks to scanning cash registers!

As you can see it is very important to have a plan in action in the result of a natural or man-made disaster. With the countless amount of information available on the internet, one can be overwhelmed.
