Interior Decorating Styles for Spring - Easy Ways to Let the Sunshine In...!
Well, I’m loving the weather right at the moment – it has been a long time coming, but Spring is finally here…!
The only thing is, when the sunlight starts streaming in through the windows, my home starts looking a little dusty and shabby … and I have to start thinking about a big Spring clean, and maybe a spot of re-decorating, or a Spring-time makeover.
Suddenly, the heavy fabrics and warm colors of winter are too much for my sunlit home – I feel full of the joys of Spring – and I want my home to reflect that too…
But don’t worry – getting your home ready for Spring and Summer needn’t turn into a huge project – it is actually just a simple matter of making some minor changes, to make your home more habitable, fresh and cheerful during the Spring and Summer months.
My first task for my Spring home has got to be a thorough Spring clean. Spring is a great time to have a good clear out, tidy up and sort through books, magazines, clothes and other belongings that might have just been stagnating and collecting dust all winter … what do you really need, what have you grown tired of, or what is too heavy, fluffy or dull now Spring has arrived…?
You needn’t actually get rid of all your things – just pack them up into boxes and put into storage – that way you will have them ready to get out again next Winter – when you just can’t wait to wrap yourself in that cosy, faux-fur throw, and cheer yourself up with those colourful, red accessories, again.
But, for now, you need something a little lighter and fresher in feel, to go with that bright and breezy Spring atmosphere…
Pull curtains and blinds right back, to let the sunlight stream right into your windows and light up your home. I always take down big heavy curtains – velvets, cords, chenille etc, to make room for floaty, white voiles, or pretty, floral, cotton and chintzes. It gives my room a fresh and clean feel, in an instant.
Swap Wintery faux-fur throws, or knitted throws and cushions, for items in lighter fabrics and colors.
In the Spring time, try to choose items with floral patterns, or featuring birds or butterflies, for a fresh, country-meadow feel.
Colors that will help make your home feel more Spring like, and will see you through to the Summer too, are fresh white, creams, yellows and pastel pinks, lilacs, blues and greens. A pale or bright, vibrant green will always evoke nature and foliage, so is a great choice for all seasons, but particularly so, going into Spring and Summer.
I do think, though, the most important change you can make to your Spring and Summer home is to bring the outdoors in – definitely go for some fresh flowers in your home. Flowers can make a great focal point for your Spring room – display them prominently on a mantle, sideboard, windowsill or table – and they can be regularly renewed to create a fresh feel every week.
Beautiful Spring blooms have got to be that special indulgence that no home should be without… So speak nicely to the man of the house … or if he won’t oblige, just buy your own…!
