Sheetrock: An Evolution in the Building Industry
is a trademark of the United States Gypsum Corporation, or USG Corporation. USG is a Fortune 500 company that manufactures construction materials. The USG Corporation has been around for 18 years. It was founded in 1985 and is currently based out of Chicago, Illinois. The brand includes items to create durable, long-lasting walls. The United States Gypsum Corporation has six subsidiaries, including the United States Gypsum Company, which first patented drywall in 1917. Since that time, more and more homes have been built using drywall, instead of the traditional plaster. These days, around 95% of US homes use drywall, with Sheetrock being the number one selling brand. At first, drywall products did not take right off in the building industry. At the time of their invention, there was no good way to join the panels together to form a smooth surface. This meant that walls did not look very appealing. In those days, the sheets of drywall were attached with strips of perforated steel. This meant that drywall panels were utilitarian only, and not visually appealing. No one wanted a home full of strips of batten steel, even if it did cost less than plaster. Nowadays, of course, there are compounds and methods that are used to produce visually appealing, smooth walls. Gone are the days of industrial looking walls, and in are the smooth surfaced walls that are efficient and cost effective, meaning we can spend our money in other areas of our homes. When most people think of Sheetrock, they think of drywall. Many people do not realize that Sheetrock is actually a brand name, and extends to such products as joint compound, joint tape, primer, metal bead and trim, and setting powder. also extends its product line to include such accessories as tape on corners, convertible hoppers that are used to dispense joint compound, and tools like knives and scrapers and mud pans that are used to apply the compounds to the drywall. offers a line of affordable products that are necessary to building quality homes and buildings. Without Sheetrock, and drywall in general, our homes would be less efficient and cost more. In fact, the time period when drywall became a hit was after World War II, during the housing boom. Since then, drywall has become a staple in the building industry and changed the way our homes are built forever.
