Artisan Handmade Tapestries - Good "Old Fashion" Works of Art

A tapestry is an ancient form of artwork that is made up of threads, woven on a loom to create many different designs, patterns and images. Traditionally, these works of art were hand-woven and hand-crafted. However, with the passing of time and with the development of new, technologically-advanced and progressive instruments that cut the production time in half or more, a lot of these decorative items have begun to be produced more and more by machines and mechanical devices rather than by human hands.

Some people believe that the origins of painted, printed and embroidered wall hanging decorations and art can be traced as far back as Ancient India. During this time period, items such as these were used in ceremonial rites, religious activities and as a divider for different areas of a temple. As time passed by, the availability of artisan handmade tapestries became quite rare as more and more human hands were being replaced by the development and creation of machines. However, in a way, the rarity of these works of art helped make them more famous, because as the supply grew less and less, the demand for it grew more and more. So much so that it made these unique decorative handiworks well-known all over the world and aspired for by people who can and cannot afford them.

In time, a fine art now known as Kalamkari was developed by native artisans and weavers to meet the demands of people all over the world for decorative wall hangings and art decor. This specific form of art employs the use of a pen-brush to draw and illustrate mythological creatures and subjects on fabric or textile materials. Often these creations are decorated and adorned with coins, beads, shells and the like, to create depth and texture and to produce amazing stories depicting historical events and magical moments.

A lot of people from South Asia, as well as some parts of South America, have developed and preserved the fine tradition of creating and producing handmade or hand-crafted tapestries. Some of these communities even rely on the said craft as a primary means of income.

This kind of art is not merely used as decoration, but can also be used as vests, shawls, carpets and blankets. The skilled hands of cottage industry workers and craftsmen in rural areas of South Asia and South America make use of local materials, as well as natural fibers of only the finest quality to produce these magnificent pieces.
