Anti-Aging Benefits Of Collagen And Anti-Oxidants

The use of anti-aging skin care products continues to rise each year; reducing the visible signs of aging is the goal for many people as they grow older, and why shouldn't it be? The skin care industry uses beauty products that increase the synthesis of the protein collagen, the main protein in skin which becomes less elastic as we age; twenty-five per cent of the skin's protein is collagen. This area of anti-aging treatments is connected to another group of products that help people to look young; this group is called antioxidants and apart from their cell repairing ability, they may be able to reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease.

You probably know many anti-oxidants by name, including vitamin C, the use of which is still, even now, hotly debated in the science and nutrition community. Vitamin C formulated skin care treatments suffer with a particular problem of oxidizing on contact with the air which causes a problem for users and manufacturers.

To get around this some skin care treatments are based on derivatives of vitamin C, which are more stable and less expensive. Unfortunately the anti-oxidant products used to replace vitamin C are not as effective but as vitamin E and lipoic acid can both have the same effect; this is not too much of a problem.

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant and is found in human blood; one particular disease it may help to prevent is certain types of cancer. Another of these is lipoic acid which is found in every cell of our body to help generate energy for us to live; an additional function is to repair skin damage caused by the normal aging process.

Phytochemicals aren't produced by the body but are extracted from a number of plants and used in many anti-aging skin care products to combat the signs of aging. A further benefit of these phytochemicals is their ability to prevent the onset of certain cancers; for example:

*Prostate Cancer
*Cancer that attacks the Breast
*Cancer of the Bowel

These three types of cancer are also becoming a global problem.

Surprisingly, the group of vitamins; B5, B6, and B12 have also shown that they can be used to help reduce the effects of aging. Although the area of anti-aging skin care products is huge, more is being learned about the whole aging process and about natural products that can reduce the effects it has on our bodies as well as our skin. Gradually, new discoveries will be made to advance our understanding of the aging process; however, research is moving forward rapidly and it is only a matter of time before a new generation of products becomes available.

There may be many challenges still to overcome but in time scientists believe they will succeed in producing more effective anti-aging skin care products that are less expensive and available to more people. However, man-made skin care regimes should be used only as a supplement; in some respects the real way ahead lies in our own hands as there are many things we can do to reduce the signs of aging - naturally. Regular sleep patterns, exercise, a good healthy diet and less stress will all contribute to reducing the signs of aging, for instance!
