Domain registration made easy

When the time comes to get a web domain name for a new business or a personal site, or just to secure your own name as a dot com, the process is fast and easy.

To begin with, think of the domain name you want. Most of the majority of the internet domain services, like Godaddy, offer various tools which you can use. You type in any name, and they will reveal whether the domain is taken already or not. If it is still free, you can register it. If it is already registered by someone else, then the registration service will offer you different versions of the name to think about, or you could think about using other suffixes, like .net, .org or even .mobi.

Although .com domains are still the most familiar and most common, the number of visitors you will get to your new domain will be due to your optimization and promotion abilities and will have very little to do with the suffix, so don't be to upset if you don't get the .com extension of the name you wanted.

Right, you have found the domain you love, and it is not already registered by somebody else, what exactly do you do now?

Going to a domain site like Godaddy, and having completed the search for the name and established that it is unregistered, you will simply click on a 'Go to Checkout' button or something like it.

Next you will decide on the number of years you want to make the registration last – from one to 10 years. If you have exciting ideas for the web site, or want it as an investment, go for a longer period. If the domain is just for securing for the present, choose a shorter time.

Now, you have to type in your real name and email contact details. If you have a company, you should also insert the company name. All this is used for the registration of the domain – the domain is recorded as legally belonging to you, for the length of time you have registered it for. In technical terms, you become the 'registrant' of the domain name, and no-one else can use it.

Following on with the registration, you will be able to select if your registration is to be public, or protected (or 'private'). A public registration will mean that any persion using a Whois lookup service will be able to look up the domain name and see your name and details. When thinking about the site you are going to make, you may decide paying the small amount extra for a private registration which conceals your details will be worthwhile to avoid spam or crank messages.

After having made your choice, you can enter your credit card or Paypal details, pay the fee, and the domain becomes yours, for the length of time you have selected. The best registration services like Godaddy will inform you, using the contact details you registered with, when the time comes to renew the registration of the domain.

Internet domain registration is really as easy as that!
