Silly String for Small Face

My friend told me once that she can make any situation better or at least more

interesting, and I didn't really listen because I only care about actions, not words.

I do, of course, remember some words on occasion, and I think I vaguely

remembered her saying 'make things more interesting.' So, after we started

working at a toy store--about two or three weeks ago--I asked her if she could make my

situation more interesting. She accepted the challenge.

I work at check stand #6. My friend approached "#6" and handed me a can

of silly string. She told me that when a man with a blue shirt passed through my line I

should give him the silly string and let him know that it was free of charge.

Being naturally suspicious, I assumed that she might be playing a cruel joke on me,

so I asked her if she had actually paid for the silly string. She rolled her eyes and

pulled a quarter-crumpled receipt out of her pocket and let me have it. Sure enough, the

receipt said she had purchased a can of green silly string only ½ hour before. I asked

what the man looked like. She said he was tall with glasses and a dark receding hairline. I

asked her how she knew he would go through my checkout line. She looked around and told me

that after 10:30 at night I was always the last checker working on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I

looked around too and remembered she was right.

"Well," I said "All right, but I have to know what will

happen."

"Just trust me" she said and then she walked off, leaving her green silly

string on my conveyer belt.

Fifteen minutes later the man my friend had described walked through my line. I said

hello and after he had purchased his items, I asked him if he would like some free green

silly string.

"What?" he said.

"Silly

string
?" a small face said from behind the man.

"Yeah, silly string," I said.

"Dad!" The small face said. "That stuff can shoot with lots of

pressure!" The man shot me a grin plus a raised eyebrow and said "well all

right" and I put the silly string in their bag. The man pulled it out of the bag and

handed it to the small face. The small face looked at the silly string and smiled as his

small hands wrapped around the canister.

I had to admit that the night was getting more interesting.

"So you made the kid happy," I said.

"His name is Kev," she said.

"How do you know his name?"

"I used to work at the day care center where he stays during the

day."

"Oh," I said, "Why the silly string?"

"He likes it," she said. "We talked about pressure during our

science unit and he kept trying to blow things up. Kind of annoying you know….but

cute. He just kept talking about pressure for days and when I showed the kids how aerosol

silly string cans can release pressure, he begged to spray the can for days."

"Oh," I said. "Are you going to do that again?"

"Maybe," she shrugged.
