Relationship Psychology

The following story & questions are an example of some text and curriculum that can be found in a Cognitive Restructuring Manualized Workbook.

The Johnson and Miller families resided in the same area and attended the same public schools. They saw each other frequently. Scott Miller was Jason's age and saved him in 6th grade when a group of older bullies were beating him up.

Scuffed up and semi-conscious, Jason woke up to Jenny (Scott's little sister) as she was crying and cleaning the blood from his face, his head in her lap. He was saddened to see his teacher arrive as he had a secret deep crush on this beauty with a ponytail and deep blue eyes.

When Jason finished serving detention he moved to another state to work for his uncle in construction and completely lost communication with Jenny. In time he was on his own, buying older homes and fixing them up to resell. At age 23, he returned to his hometown and discovered that the majority of his family were living in misery.

Though he endured numerous negative effects from childhood abuse, he had freed himself from the chains of his past. He was able to forgive his mother and the father he hardly knew. His view of others changed. He discovered a deep freedom. The world he encountered sprang up from this fresh understanding and there lay his destiny a life of struggle, but also a life of giving and receiving love.

With his change of heart and increased self-esteem, he mustered the strength to knock on Jenny's front door. It was a few days before Christmas and unbeknownst to him, Jenny was home from college. Before he was arrested and sent to detention, he was a regular visitor to the Miller home. He had saved Scott's life when he had almost drowned in a nearby swimming hole.

Jason hadn't seen Jenny for 6 years and he was not prepared for the beautiful girl who answered the door. In the beginning she did not even recognize him as he stammered and tried to get a few words out. However, soon the words came out, "Jenny, it's me, Jason." With a shriek, catching Jason off guard, Jenny was hugging her childhood friend.

As time passed, with his frequent visits to Jenny's college, their deep friendship developed into a deep love, and in May they were married, committing to one another their eternal love and loyalty. Making love they became one. Their life together became greater than what they could've become alone.
